2020 年罗卡斯·德·塞纳
Rocas de Seña – the Estate’s 2nd wine - takes its name from the rocky soils found in the Aconcagua Valley in tribute to its geography. Those soils lend unique characteristics to the wine, and the large volcanic rocks are reminiscent of the holistic landscape in the vineyard. The launch of Seña’s second wine aims to continue exploring the expression of our terroir with a unique blend from selected blocks of our Seña vineyard and the addition of the Mediterranean varieties that flourish in the Aconcagua Valley to deliver elegance and a youthful freshness.
Guided by intuition and backed by family heritage, Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi handcrafted a wine of distinctive quality and character. Sena is the culmination of their wonderful parternship and a passionate journey. Sena is an authentic Chilean blend made from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot varieties. The Carmenere variety adds an evident Chilean personality to the wine. Chadwick and Mondavi searched for four long years before finding the ideal Chilean terroir in Valle de Aconcagua. There, they acquired 350 hectares of virgin hillside land, with grapes grown with a biodynamic approach. This is Chile’s finest premium wine.

Seña is the culmination of a journey that began as a heart-felt partnership and a deep desire to create a Bordeaux-style red blend with a very Chilean soul. Seña’s predominant variety is Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carmenere clearly ties it to Chile. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot round out the blend that Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi envisioned so many years ago.
Finding the ideal terroir was essential to the project, and it was found after four years of search, in the Aconcagua Valley, 40 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. Seña’s 42-hectare hillside vineyard planted to key red Bordeaux varieties on the eastern side of the Coastal Mountains, facing away from the sea, protects the vines from the direct effect of the ocean’s strong, cold winds and creates perfect cool-climate conditions for producing red grapes that reach an excellent level of maturity with balanced acidity that provide great elegance and finesse. The climate is Mediterranean, and the colluvial soils on the valley’s slopes present a variety of textures and proportions of stone content, resulting in a great diversity of well-drained gravel, rock, and loam.
The search for better ways to conserve and work with nature to produce the finest possible wine with a clear sense of origin led to sustainable practices and organic agriculture, and ultimately, to employing biodynamic practices. By the early years of the new millennium, Eduardo Chadwick, like others in the Chilean wine industry, had tried most of the traditional ways to promote their wines around the world. And despite his team’s efforts, the message of Chile’s potential for making world-class wines still was not getting fully recognized due to Chile’s relatively short international history. He needed a way to really grab attention and open the eyes of world-critics.
The Tasting of Berlin
Eduardo was inspired by a landmark event that took place in France, organised in 1976 by Steven Spurrier, who invited top French critics to a blind tasting of French and Californian wines. When the final results were revealed, they were all stunned to learn that wines from California topped the list of the red and the white wines. The event now known as the Judgment of Paris turned the wine world upside down, because they were tasted blind. And if it worked for California, why not for Chile?
Thus he organized what would come to be known as the Berlin Tasting, and invited Europe’s most influential wine writers, sommeliers, and leading critics to blind taste his own wines, Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve, Seña, and Viñedo Chadwick, along with wines which were widely recognized as the most classic, from the most respected origins in the world, and furthermore, chosen from the 2000 and 2001 harvests that Robert Parker had heralded as the millennium vintage, the one he had awarded the most wines with a perfect 100 score. The judges would not know the identity of the wines in their glasses, and therefore any personal biases toward or against a given origin or brand would be eliminated.
The day of the event, January 23, 2004, the event was hosted by top wine-personalities, Steven Spurrier, the man who had organized the Judgment of Paris, along with Rene Gabriel, who was recognized as the leading palate in Switzerland and one of the most important German-speaking wine critics. Very attentive, curious, interested, and even surprised participants gathered at the Ritz Carlton Berlin Hotel for a seminar on Chilean, Bordeaux, and Tuscan terroir before the tasting. Then, 36 of Europe’s most knowledgeable and influential palates sat down to evaluate 16 wines from France, Italy, and Chile. An hour later, the world would begin thinking about Chilean wines in a very different way, with the following result emerging:
1 - Viñedo Chadwick 2000
2 - Seña 2001
3 - Chateau Lafite-Rothschild 2000
