Purple Angel has all of the character and complexity we are accustomed to. With an intense and deep carmine-red colour, the wine delivers a pool of fresh fruit aromas, such as blackberry, blueberry, red plum, and ripe cherry. There is also bakery, candied, and subtle spice notes that mix well with the aromas from the French oak, including balanced toast, vanilla, and mocha.

Harvest Note
Concentrated winter rains totaling 20 inches provided a important water supply for the vineyards at a level not experienced in more than ten years. Budbreak and fruit set took place as expected, without spring frost, assuring the production of good-quality bunches. Significant rain after ripening created a huge amount of work in the vineyards to increase ventilation and enhance fruit drying. Timely action allowed winemakers to reach harvest with healthy grapes of good quality. Generally speaking, the season was cooler than the previous one, resulting in better color and aroma concentration and fresh wines with great personality.

Tasting Note
Deep brick-red in colour, typical of the Carmenère variety, the aromas are intense, with ripe blackberry, plum, and blueberry. On the palate, black and blue fruit is completmented by sweet spice, pink pepper, coffee, and tobacco. The palate is balanced and silky, with a caramel-like body and very long finish.

Food Pairing
Pairs well with red meat, rosemary lamp chops, pork ribs, or cannelloni.

Vina Montes is an icon of Colchagua, producing some of the best-known wines in the region and beyond. Although Montes is associated with the Montes family, the production and Montes winery is actually owned by several associates who today claim over 700 hectares of vineyards. In recent years, Aurelio Montes Snr handed over winemaking duties to his son Aurelio Jnr who now heads up the team in Apalta who makes wines from all over Chile.
Viña Montes is the shared vision of four friends, first dreamed up in the late 1980s, of making Chilean wines to a higher level than the world had ever seen. Now sold in more than 100 countries and noted as pioneers of high-end Chilean wine, Montes has undoubtedly achieved that goal. Perhaps it is the work of the angels that adorn the winery at every turn and, indeed, the wines’ labels – a superior presence that one of the founders felt alongside him, they add to the winery’s decidedly mystical air.
