美格威士忌起源于一个家族想要酿造一种他们喜欢饮用并与朋友分享的波本威士忌。这在今天算不上革命性，但在 1953 年却改变了一个行业。比尔·塞缪尔斯 (Bill Samuels, Sr.) 创立美格威士忌的初衷，始于他唯一一份家族值得信赖的 170 年历史的配方副本。当然，第六代酿酒师很快就把这份配方付之一炬。

在过程中不小心烧坏了一套窗帘后，比尔尝试了不同的调味谷物，寻找属于自己的麦芽浆配方。为了节省数年的陈酿时间，比尔用各种谷物组合烤了几条面包，而不是蒸馏它们。他的快速反应不仅节省了时间，还使他用柔软的红色冬小麦代替了波本威士忌中常用的传统黑麦。这取代了黑麦的辣味，取而代之的是如今 Maker's 闻名的细腻甜味。
