Only 2,400 bottles were produced that year. Concentrated and elegant flavors of cherry, berry, plum and currant are well-integrated and supported by silky tannins. Rich mineral and underbrush accents linger on the refined finish. It’s clearly recognizable as Pinot Noir, and it has the subtleness, elegance and perfume of the best examples of the grape. There are notes of blood orange skin, exotic spices and a core of crunchy red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, with the tannins of the granite yet with a flinty sensation. It’s both elegant and powerful, concentrated but soft.

The 2016 Angelus is composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, aged 18 to 22 months in new barrels and foudres. Deep garnet-purple colored, it drifts effortlessly out of the glass with sensuous notes of lavender, candied violets, garrigue, Ceylon tea and iron ore with a core of warm black cherries, mulberries, ripe plums and aniseed plus wafts of cedar chest and cloves. Medium to full-bodied, the perfumed fruit whispers of great intensity and depth, with the vivacious fruit well knit into the plush, seductive frame of velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. Still very tightly wound with amazing tension at this stage, it truly needs a good 6-8 more years in bottle to deliver the fully expressed layers that this soft-spoken, profound beauty promises.

Chateau Croizet-Bages 2000’s deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by creamy, black currant, cedar, and toast aromas, excellent purity, a rich, medium-bodied style, and sweet tannin in the moderately long finish. This lovely effort offers loads of fruit, sweet tannin, medium body, admirable delineation as well as purity, and surprising length.

Showing spectacularly, the 2017 Chateau Canon checks in as a final blend of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc that’s from one of the most exceptional terroirs in the appellation. Hitting 14% alcohol, it reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as gorgeously sweet raspberries and cassis-like fruit interwoven with notes of spring flowers, rose petal, white chocolate, and spice. While it doesn’t have the massive opulence of the 2015 and 2016, it’s more classically styled as well flawlessly balanced, with a terrific sense of minerality, ultra-fine tannins, and a brilliant finish. Give bottles 5-7 years in the cellar, and it will evolve gracefully for 30-40 years.

The nose is fruity, fresh, relatively gourmand and offers a nice maturity. It reveals notes of crushed blackberry, fresh/ripe cassis and slight notes of small fruits associated with hints of wood/cacao as well as a very discreet hint of licorice. The palate is fruity, juicy, fresh, mineral and offers a nice balance, a beautiful acid frame, a beautiful tension as well as fat and suavity. In the mouth this wine expresses notes of fresh/ripe blackberry, raspberry and slight notes of small berries associated with a discreet hint of fresh cassis as well as a hint of licorice and slight touches of dark chocolate.

The 2016 Lascombes has a decadent, but pure bouquet with layers of black cherry and blueberry fruit, the new oak conspicuous and (as usual) quite glossy and extroverted in style. The palate is very ripe with saturated tannin, bold and extravagant with a voluminous middle of blackberry, graphite and blue fruit. There is a powerful and heady finish; what it just lacks is finesse and that sense of personality.

What strikes first is the fresh aromatic bouquet that emerges as the wine is poured. It presents a deep red color and remarkable aromatic intensity. The nose is pure and vibrant, dominated by Cabernet Franc, which brings fresh notes of liquorice, mint, and spice.
On the palate, the wine opens with a lively, attractive freshness. It has charm and character, offering aromatic richness supported by supple tannins that create generous volume. The finish is fresh and flavorful, lingering pleasantly on the palate. With a bit of air, the tannins soften further, and the finish lengthens, revealing even greater finesse.

An utter delight! Intense purple red colour, with aromas of black cherry and flowers like violet. Fresh, vibrant entrance, due to its natural acidity and the minerality provided by the Altamira terroir. In the mouth it is juicy, of good structure and volume with a long, tense and vibrant end. A lovely earthy character with an inner electricity shining all the way through.

La Grande Année Rosé 2015 is a blend of 11 crus, predominantly 62% of Pinot Noir from Verzenay, Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and 38% of Chardonnay from Chouilly and Avize. The blend includes 5 % red wine from La Côte aux Enfants parcel.
Fermentation takes place entirely in oak barrels, and the wine is aged, sealed with a natural cork, for more than twice the time required by the appellation. The dosage is moderate, 8 grams per litre.
The 2015 vintage promises excellence, and La Grande Année Rosé 2015 reflects this beautifully. With delicate pink hues, its nose bursts with fresh strawberry, mandarin, and rhubarb. It’s silky and juicy on the palate, leading with stone fruits and finishing with blood orange notes. Elegantly tannic with a subtle, velvety finish, this wine captures the essence of the forest and woodland.

Oak-aged for 24 months, this shows a clear ruby red color. On the nose, the attack is fruity and floral at the same time with hints reminiscent of blackcurrants, blueberries and raspberries; floral notes reminiscent of violets and dog roses follow. This is followed by spicy notes reminiscent of black pepper, cloves and star anise. Delicate tertiary notes and freshness given by balsamic and citrus scents are also interesting. The palate reveals a nice acid-alcoholic component and the tannic texture is well present, dense and silky.

A towering, thrilling wine, the 2016 Mouton Rothschild is unbelievably beautiful today. Aromatics, fruit density and vertical structure all come together. In the glass, the 2016 is remarkably vivid and powerful, and yet a gentler, more feminine side emerges with time in the glass. The intense, mineral, savory profile recalls the 1986, but the 2016 has more grace, inner sweetness and sophistication than that wine. Even so, the 2016 is going to need at least a number of years in bottle before it starts drinking well, although it won’t be the bruiser the 1986 remains to this day. This is breathtaking wine from Mouton, Technical Director Philippe Dhalluin and his team.

The 2016 Le Carillon d’Angelus is blended of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, aged 16 months in 50% new French oak. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it strides confidently out of the glass with pure, polished black cherries, fresh blackberries and black raspberry scents with nuances of unsmoked cigars, hoisin, black truffles and wet stones plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has great elegance and sophistication, with the lively red and black fruit flavors adeptly structured with soft, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing on a lingering earthy note.

Its bright ruby red color introduces us to a floral bouquet of iris and violets, along with scents of red berries and hints of aromatic herbs. It is fresh and generous on the palate, with extremely fine-grained tannins that integrate splendidly with its tangy notes and crisp red fruit. Suggestions of underbrush linger on the aromatic finish. An ideal red for accompanying traditional Tuscan dishes such as pappa al pomodoro (bread and tomato soup) or pici with game sauces, but also – served cool – selections of rustic cold cuts, a tartare of raw meat, testaroli with a basil pesto, or even fish with various sauces.

Named after the rare Marsican bear, native to Frank’s father Bruno’s homeland, Abruzzo. The same bear can be seen in the night sky over Italy forming the Ursa Major – a constellation that has been a navigational reference point for ages. Marsican is a tribute to Frank Mitolo’s heritage and his fathers enduring influence and guidance.
Marsican Shiraz is a prized blend of our finest barrels from three distinct single vineyard sites in McLaren Vale. Situated only kilometres from the cooling breezes of the Gulf St Vincent, these three vineyards are the source of our prized single vineyard Shiraz’s, Savitar, G.A.M. and Angela.
- Savitar – 45 year old vines, Chinese Block, Aldinga sub region, East/West orientation, North East pocket, river stone over black Biscay clay and limestone, a dark and dense cracking soil that delivers vibrant and lush Shiraz with great structure.
- G.A.M. – 45 year old vines, Chinese Block, Aldinga sub region, East/West orientation, Western pocket, delivers an opulent and brooding style of Shiraz, of rich black fruits, olive tapenade and spice.
- Angela – 30 year old vines, Sandra’s Block, Willunga sub region, North/South orientation, alluvial Christies Beach formation with ironstone and shale producing a slightly brighter fruit profile and complete structure.
A careful blend of these three distinct single vineyard sites which each speak so loudly of place, form a seamless, harmonious and unique interpretation of the south western pocket of McLaren Vale delivering an opulent and brooding style of Shiraz, of rich black fruits, olive tapenade and spice.
Each parcel of fruit for Marsican is fermented on skins for approximately ten days. Parcels are fermented quite cool, which helps to preserve the bright fruit characters without extracting any hard or bitter tannins from the skins and seeds. After ten days the wines are gently pressed and run down to oak barrels, of which 100% are new, stored for 18 months after which each barrel is considered for the final Marsican blend.
Deep and brooding with black cherry, dark chocolate, coffee and freshly turned earth. Aromas are clear and well delineated. Complex, layered & fine with terrific finesse. It opens with ripe black cherry, mocha and sweet spices unfolding silkily across the palate. Despite its power and polish, it has remarkable elegance with all its components in beautiful balance. Fine, ripe tannins and perfectly judged acidity frame it all boding well for excellent cellaring potential. While rich and expressive now, the greatest rewards await those with the patience to allow it to slowly evolve in a cool cellar for the next 35 years.
