This label dedicated to Maurizio Zanella is the perfect synthesis of the Cantina’s history, its values of excellence and the vocation of the Franciacorta territory to produce also great reds for ageing. A Bordeaux blend with a strong personality and character, among the most interesting Italian expressions of this type of wine. In the glass, it has an intense ruby-red colour. The bouquet expresses the aromas of small berries, blackberry and blueberry jam, spices, and woody and balsamic hints. The palate has an important structure with deep aromas, a tannic texture well integrated with the body of the wine and pleasant freshness.

This is stunning. Troplong never has trouble conjuring up wonderfully rich fruit, but here it is plump and dense without being pumped up. The tannins are chewy rather than chalky, but the elegance of the vintage is unmistakable, and the rich chocolate flavours are dusted with mint. There is a very pretty salinity on the finish that lasts for minutes. I had a fascinating visit here at the start of the week, and retasted several times as this is a wine that I sometimes have trouble understanding. My main takeout is that the majority of the richness here is found naturally in the terroir – limestone on the plateau but with cool clay over the top, which explains why they are such late harvesters. But there are always winemaking and viticultural choices coming into play in any wine, and here there are adjustments being made to bring out a more finely wrought version of what is always a high impact and successful wine. Yields are higher this year, up at 48hl/ha, which helps, as does the style of the vintage and quieter extraction in the cellar, but Troplong remains true to itself.

Pale gold in color with a fine mousse, the Brut Majeur is aromatic on the nose. On the palate, it is well balanced and shows great style and complexity. Pinot Noir gives the wine richness and a long finish while Chardonnay, from the finest soils of the Ci«ote des Blancs, adds delicacy, liveliness and freshness.

Deep, dense colour with glints of violet. Very expressive nose with black fruit and subtle notes of toast. On the palate, the attack is powerful, dense and structured. The mid-palate is full-bodied, with a fine, well-balanced tannic structure. The finish has plenty of volume with superbly ripened tannins, while remaining elegant and refined, thanks to the quality of the grapes of this exceptional vintage.

Made from 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc brought up in plenty of new oak, its ruby/plum color is followed by an awesome bouquet of blackberry jam, smoked meats, licorice, truffle, and hints of chocolate. Thick, opulent, super ripe, and decadent, with a full-bodied mouthfeel that needs to be tasted to be believed, it still stays balanced and fresh on the palate and is already impossible to resist. It’s going to keep for 3+ decades.

 Deep ruby colour with purple nuances. Intense aromas of ripe black berries and black plum mixed with spices and vanilla notes. Dense and deep. Taut with an elegant structure and a tight texture. Well-integrated tannins. It is perfectly matched with red meat grilled or en sauce and all cheeses, especially the local cheeses like Epoisses or Citeaux.

Deep ruby. Intense aromas of ripe red fruit (raspberry and cherry) with hints of raspberry liqueur and spices. Well-structured and complex. Intense fruit. Delicate, deep texture with well-crafted tannins. Good length with notes of jammy fruits.  Great with roasted, grilled or marinated red meats, game birds and game animals.

Undisputedly symbolic of the Speri company, the Amarone Monte Sant’Urbano is a superb example of a fine, classic wine. It is an extraordinary wine with great complexity and a vigorous structure which has always been top for its elegance and quality. After carefully selecting the best bunches from the prestigious Monte Sant’Urbano vineyard, the grapes are left to dry for a long period (3-4 months depending on the vintage year). This creates a wine with plenty of structure and softness which will certainly age well.

This complex and fragrant wine opens with dried violet, black plum and cooking spice aromas. A fresh, lightly exotic nose, offering dates, figs, fresh earth and a hint of toasted coconut. On the palate there’s a fresh, focused bead of ripe and dried fruit, riding equally intense, firm tannins. Long finish. From organically grown grapes. There’s a youthful feel to this. It’s just at the start of a long life.

For the Riserva, the wine is aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months. Brilliant purple wine with a floral nose dominated by violet and rosehip aromas. Blackcurrant fruity notes lead into marked spiced highlights of black pepper and nutmeg followed by underbrush and humus. The wine is fresh, complex and rich to the palate. The tannin structure is rich and dense as appropriate for the most authentic Sangiovese. The finish is persistent, harmonious and bequeaths pleasant memories of noble tobacco.

Elegant aromas of ripe plum and red fruits framed by black Pepper spice notes. Unoaked to showcase the characterful Fruit, the full-bodied palate is balanced between firm Tannins and vibrant acidity leading to a long and intense Finish. Grilled red meats or tuna, pasta and rice dishes with Duck or pheasant sauces, sardinian pecorino cheese.

Rose Majeur is the perfect embodiment of the originality and finesse of the House’s wines. Made predominantly from Chardonnay it is crafted with the addition of a small proportion of Pinot Noir from the best crus of the Montagne de Reims. A low dosage enables it to express the House style, both feminine and generous, with great elegance.

Pale, with a delicate pink hue. Charming, generous and open. Reveals aromas of red berries (strawberries, raspberries) and vine peaches. Light yet expressive. Shows great freshness, due to the high proportion of chardonnay in the blend. Notes of red gooseberries and raspberries, with a lengthy and voluptuous finish.

Castelgiocondo is produced from an uncompromising selection of the finest Sangiovese grapes, in a vineyard whose ideal elevation, well-drained soils, and southwest-facing exposure yield all of the qualities that converge to produce the finest expression of this ancient grape variety. CastelGiocondo’s unique location in Montalcino, with its varied exposure and terrain – galestro, clay and Pleocene sands – offers infinite nuances to this Brunello. A multi-faceted experience that evolves over time and entices us to discover, taste and remember, again and again.

The 2018 CastelGiocondo is an intense shade of ruby red. CastelGiocondo is always set  apart by its elegance, and in this vintage, this characteristic is more marked than ever. The  fruity notes, the first to hit our olfactory receptors, are dominated by blueberry and  blackberry, flanked by blackcurrant and other berries. They are followed by floral hints of  violet and dog rose, which are always found in the bouquet of the best Brunello di  Montalcino. Next on the nose are clear spicy notes of black pepper and cardamom, chased  by a pleasant aroma of liquorice. On the palate, the tannins are dense but not harsh,  accompanied by delicate mineral notes. The consistency between the nose and palate and  the long and persistent finish make it particularly balanced.

The Lion & Dragon Rosé from Château Roubine in Provence reveals a bright, light red color in the swirled glass. When swirling the wine glass, one can perceive a first-class balance in this rosé wine, as it does not stand out on the walls of the glass, neither watery nor syrupy or liqueur-like. To the nose, this Château Roubine rosé wine shows all sorts of lemons, strawberries and pears. As if that weren't already impressive, the aging in large wooden barrels adds other aromas like toasted wood.

This rosé wine is never coarse or meager, as one might expect from a top wine. Balanced and multifaceted, this light rosé wine presents itself on the palate. Crafted from the Fuentelún parcel, the 35-year-old area of the estate, where vines emerge from the sandy soils in rows from north to south.  This Reserva strikes a beautiful balance between power and elegance, showcasing the region’s capacity for both ripe fruit expression and refined structure. This wine reveals layered aromas of dark berries, savory herbs, and elegant spice, supported by firm yet polished tannins and a lingering sense of freshness.  

Following fermentation, the Reserva is matured for 24 months in French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop depth and complexity while integrating tertiary notes. The extended barrel ageing promotes rich texture, fine grain tannins, and subtle notes of cedar, vanilla, and smoke, resulting in a wine that harmonizes fruit, wood, and terroir for an expressive, age-worthy profile.

Thanks to the acquisition of vines planted at a place called in Pontet and the chai built in Fumet, Roger Bardet developed the first cuvées of the Pontet-Fumet castle in 1962. His grandchildren, today watch over this beautiful inheritance located in the appellation of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru: a magnificent terroir by the Dordogne from South to West Graves.Sporting a beautiful dress with garnet and ruby reflections, Château Pontet-Fumet reveals a complex and elegant nose.Silky and generous on the palate, its dense and balanced structure asserts itself by a good length.

Modest but sure of its presence, Clinet lies at one of the highest points upon the renowned plateau at the heart of Pomerol – instantly recognisable by its red shutters and beautiful roses. It is home to one of the oldest vineyards in the appellation, with traces of the vineyard’s existence dating back to 1595. This vineyard is equally famed for offering wine with an incomparable character and quality. 

Clinet has been on a hot streak lately and the 2009 appears to be the greatest wine ever made at the estate, surpassing even the late Jean-Michel Arcaute’s monumental 1989. A blend of 85% Merlot and tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc (12%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%), this big Pomerol boasts an opaque, moonless night inky/blue/purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of blueberry pie, incense, truffles, black raspberries, licorice and wood smoke. Viscous and multi-dimensional with silky, sweet tannin, massive fruit concentration and full-bodied power, there are nearly 4,000 cases of this thick, juicy, perfect Clinet. It should drink well in 3-5 years and keep for 25-30 years.

Aged for about a year in oak, the wine has a beautiful red burgundy dress with garnets notes. Fine and supple, this wine reveal on the palate a round and smooth body. Served at 16 degrees, it will be delicious to accompany cooked meats, roasted meat and grilled fish.
