One of Australia most iconic and sought-after white wine, Tolpuddle Chardonnay, from the tiny island state of Tasmania, comes from a single vineyard in Coal River Valley, outside of the village of Richmond. The vineyard was planted in 1988 and is now owned by the team behind Shaw + Smith, who have elevated it to international recognition.

All fruit was hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, and fermented in French oak. The wine spent ten months in barrel with gentle stirring as required, then rested in tank on lees for a further four months. The wine is known for its precision and purity, focused and mineral-driven.

Today, Tolpuddle Chardonnay is widely considered a benchmark for modern Australian Chardonnay, often compared with top examples from Burgundy for its balance of freshness, complexity, and ageing potential.

Description

This is a genuine ‘wow’ wine – you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the grand climats of Burgundy when tasting it. Fine and precise with fresh sugar snap pea and fennel, white nectarine and a hint of struck match. There is tension and length on the palate with classic Tolpuddle Vineyard acidity and fine, chalky texture adding complexity and interest. A lesson in elegance and restraint.

About the Brand

Tolpuddle Vineyard is one of the most celebrated single vineyards in Tasmania, located in the cool-climate Coal River Valley near Hobart. The vineyard was planted in 1988 and quickly gained recognition for producing outstanding Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, thanks to its maritime climate, long growing season, and well-drained soils.

In 2011, the site was purchased by the team behind Shaw + Smith in Adelaide Hills and Domaine A, who undertook extensive vineyard improvements while maintaining its focus on low yields and meticulous viticulture.

Today, Tolpuddle produces only two wines—Chardonnay and Pinot Noir—both regarded as benchmarks for cool-climate Australian wine. With its emphasis on single-vineyard purity, precision and elegance, Tolpuddle has earned international acclaim and frequent high scores from leading wine critics.
