Nestled in the rolling hills of western Sonoma County, the Russian River Valley appellation is a perfect micro-climate for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  The organically-grown Don Miguel Vineyard, named after the late patriarch of the Torres family, is in the Green Valley - the coolest, foggiest region of the Russian River Valley, only ten miles from the Pacific. Planted in the European-style high density of over 2,000 vines/acre, the yields are low and labour is intensive; but the vines live longer and the grapes acquire better balance and greater concentration, as well as more elegance and finesse.

La Masia means 'The Farmhouse' in Catalonia, the Torres's family home region, as the winery is designed to resemble a classic Catalan farmhouse. The has grown grapes in Spain since the 17th century and our philosophy has always been to produce a wine as an extension of farming the vineyard.

Description

The organically-grown Don Miguel Vineyard – Named after the late patriarch of the Torres family, this sustainable vineyard is located in the Green Valley — the coolest, foggiest region of the Russian River Valley, only ten miles from the Pacific. Planted in the European-style high density of over 2,000 vines/acre, the yields are low and labor is intensive; but the vines live longer and the grapes acquire better balance and greater concentration, as well as more elegance and finesse. After undergoing 100% malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged on its lees for nine months.

Lovely nose, intense and floral, reminiscent of Meyer lemon and orchard fruit like pear and apple. The palate is fresh and elegant, intense and mineral, with nicely framed oak and a touch of vanilla; the mouthfeel is creamy and long, with notes of biscuit, pie crust and meringue. Delightful to drink right now but it will continue to develop and last for at least 15 to 20 years.

About the Brand

Marimar Torres came to live in California in 1975. After two years of searching, she acquired the land and began planting the vineyard in 1986. Today there are 30 acres planted with Chardonnay and 30 with Pinot Noir. The wines are made entirely from estate-grown grapes.

Named in honour of the late patriarch of the family, the vineyard is unique in California because it is totally European in style. The vines are trained very close to the ground on an open vertical trellis, following the slope of an east-facing hillside; the rootstocks are phylloxera resistant; and the planting density is 2000 vines per acre, four times more than is traditional in California. Such high density promotes root competition and diminishes vigor, naturally reducing the output per vine.

Cut the foil below the lower lip.
Insert the screw into the cork's center.
