The 2016 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is another second wine that tastes more like a grand vin. Made from 51.3% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it too is deeply colored and has a classic Haut Brion bouquet of minerals, crushed rocks, cassis, graphite, and violet. With medium to full-bodied richness, good concentration, building tannins, and impeccable balance, it’s more supple and sexy that it’s big brother yet still has the balance, structure, and depth to keep for two decades. It’s a stunning wine in its own right.

Pale golden in colour with yeasty aromas on the nose. Very dry but with toasty flavours in the mouth. Round and richly flavoured, full bodied and mature, with perfect balance between firmness and freshness, length equal to its richness, and with a persistent fine bead. In champagne terms, this is the definitive “masculine” style.

The 2012 Sena is half Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Carmenere, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Bright and focused, with a nose mixing red fruit, it is also bright-colored, with ripe black fruit and balsamic notes in the shape of tobacco and cedar wood, with a medium-bodied palate, very good freshness and acidity, sophisticated, polished and fine-grained tannins. This is still a baby, but the silky texture makes it accessible now, while the complexity should come with more time.

There, they acquired 350 hectares of virgin hillside land, with grapes grown with a biodynamic approach. This is Chile’s finest premium wine.

Technical Director Thomas Duroux and his team made one of the most brilliant wines of the 2016 vintage. Palmer is simply exceptional.  Crafted with 47% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, this is rich and dramatically sweeping in the glass, the 2016 is breathtaking. All the elements simply fall into place in a wine of mesmerizing beauty. The counterpoint of dark, sumptuous fruit and floral notes makes for an utterly compelling Palmer that will take its place among the estate’s finest vintages. Pomino Vinsanto stands out for its brilliant amber shades and golden reflections. Its intriguing bouquet ranges from ripe fruity scents to toasted notes. The first aromas are those of dried fruit, such as walnut and almond. These slowly give way to honey and coffee bean. Spicy nuances like nutmeg and vanilla are quick to follow. On the palate, it reveals a perfectly balanced acidity with a sweet component.

The finish is extremely long, clean and dry. Serving suggestions This meditation wine goes perfectly with various desserts, from dry pastries to soft creams and puddings. It is also ideal for savoury pairings, such as foie gras, mature cheeses or flavourful marbled cheeses. It is recommended to be served in large glasses.

Sourced from the hills between Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, this is an amazing Sparkling Wine with a clean, pleasantly fruity bouquet, reminiscent of rennet apples and peach blossom. Its flavor is rounded and well-balanced. it has a very fine, persistent bead and scents of apples and pears that act as a prelude to the flavors of ripe stone fruit with a bit of melon and orange. Fresh and lively with a long, dry, yeasty finish. Attractive sweetness on the palate, which at the same time displays drive and focus. Mineral-charged with bright lemon notes and a firm crispness. Perfect as an aperitif. An ideal accompaniment to seafood or cheese starters, as well as delicately-flavoured Italian and international cuisine.

This is an extremely friendly red, pretty purple colour with shiny reflections. The nose reveals a seductive bouquet of red fruit and spices. Full of delicacy, the palate is full of freshness and well balanced, with aromas of cherries and very soft tannins, giving this wine great drinkability.

On the palate, it offers opulent layers of honeyed apricot, dried citrus peel, and tropical fruits, enriched by notes of toasted almond and delicate floral nuances. Its luscious sweetness is harmonized by vibrant acidity, creating a wine of depth, sophistication, and a long, lingering finish. Bin 28 offers a showcase of warm-climate Australian Shiraz – ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna Vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.

Classic and dark with graphite, flint, char, black jelly bean notes on the nose. Full and expansive palate featuring an immersion of flavour saturation and a textural continuum across the palate. Persistent length and flavour, finishing firm and assertive.

The 2016 Clos Fourtet is a blend of 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc aged in 60% new oak. It has a generous, well defined licorice-tinged fruit that is very focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, blackberry and boysenberry fruit with that salted licorice theme continuing. This Clos Fourtet has impressive concentration, yet there is real elegance and persistence, fanning out wonderfully towards the finish. Mathieu Cuvelier has overseen another outstanding Clos Fourtet. Tasted twice, with a second bottle demonstrating a tad more backbone but equally admirable.

An intense and brilliant gold with delicate bubbles.  Aromas of toasted bread, mild tobacco and hazelnut followed by notes of dried flowers with a hint of eucalyptus, characteristic of Pinots from Aÿ.  Notes of candied citrus fruits, typical from the Côte des Blancs but creating the surprise in a vintage as warm as 2015. The tasting continues with notes of cocoa and dried fruits. All tasting long, beautiful bitters structure the wine which shows a great length. A subtle balance between freshness, complexity and generosity.

Composed of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, yields for the grand vin in 2017 were 43 hectoliters per hectare, and it was aged in 60% new oak. It came in at an alcohol of 13% and an IPT of 68. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cos d’Estournel needs a little coaxing to unfurl, revealing beautiful expressions of preserved plums, boysenberries, blackcurrant pastilles and wild blueberries with hints of Indian spices, menthol, lilacs and mossy tree bark plus a compelling suggestion of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and well-knit freshness supporting the tightly wound blue and black fruits layers, finishing long and fragrant. This wine will need a good 5-7 years in bottle before it begins to blossom and should go on for at least another 40 years. I expect this wine to be a blockbuster of a head-turner when I come back and taste it at 10 years of age!

The production of Montes Alpha M is extremely limited and vintages are only released if our head winemaker, Aurelio Montes considers the quality of the wine to be of a good enough standard. Production starts by selecting individual grapes at harvest time. This wine, from the Apalta Valley (a sub-region of Colchagua), is one of the best and most awarded Chilean wines.

It is an attractive amber in appearance, with plenty of orangey highlights: its very color and viscosity seem to give an indication of its richness. On the nose, a whole series of positive and powerful sensations invite us to taste it: alcohol, oak, honey and a fresh, acidulous vein, hint at its austere strength. On the palate, we find the same precise and assertive sensations we observed on the nose.

The 2016 Grosset Gaia has voluminous perfumes of blackcurrant, bramble and briar that are bold and enticing. It is powerful, dense and full-bodied, tightly wound around its firm core, yet softened by its velvety texture. It has a richness and concentration of flavour, balanced by substantial yet ultra-fine tannins. While more seductive and appealing on release than many vintages of Gaia, the 2016 shows every indication of being as age worthy as wine loves have come to expect.
