The Macallan M Black is the successor to the incredible Macallan M. This latest release is a peated and subtly smoky expression of the famous Speyside single malt, crafted in celebration of the distillery’s rich heritage and presented in a black crystal decanter from Lalique, with only 920 decanters produced. Matured in sherry seasoned oak casks and bottled at 45% abv, the Macallan M Black has chocolate coated cherries and fresh citrus on the nose, before notes of chocolate, espresso and dark fruits in the palate, opening to reveal wood spice and more peaty aspects.

M Black evolves the highly expressive aesthetic of Fabien Baron’s creative vision that makes its statement in M, in black crystal form. An evolution of the iconic M Decanter, this new step into lustrous black crystal from Lalique was crafted to reflect the diverse history of The Macallan single malt – a striking complement to a subtly smoky Macallan, The Macallan M Black is the latest and most complex release in the range. Designed specifically to celebrate a deep and smoky Macallan than its founding relation, the crystal that houses this precious spirit was also pushed into new territories.
Requiring detailed research, prototyping and experimentation, the development of the M Black decanter was an adventure in crystal that produced an end product as unique as the whisky itself. With exacting processes, long-perfected techniques and a perfect balance of innovation and heritage, M Black celebrates the union of the mastery of crystal and whisky making inside and out. An unexpected colour and geometric form challenges all perceptions of traditional decanter design and perfectly offsets the peaty notes of this unique and complex single malt.

 

Initially a rich combination of dried fruit and citrus and slowly this rolls into a rich peat smoke. It is a wonderful contrast, it is almost as if the whisky comes in two parts allowing an insight to the flavour before being enveloped in sweet peat notes. The light elements of smoked dried fruits and an almondy nuttiness makes it feel almost chewy. Long sweet dried fruit with a lengthy sweet peat flavour.

Founded in 1824, The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then we have built a reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies. The creation of The Macallan draws on the vital contributing influences of Spain, North America and Scotland - and of their respective natural raw materials, combined with traditional methods and craftsmanship.
The Macallan distillery was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. The original name of the area was “Maghellan”, taken from the Gallic word “magh”, meaning fertile ground and “Ellan”, from the Monk St.Fillan - who held a close association with the church that stood in the grounds of The Macallan Estate until 1400. Farmers had been making whisky on their Speyside farms in the area for centuries, using their surplus barley during the quieter winter months.
