An Evening of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Discovery

How does the weather influence the wines in your glass? That question was explored at an event hosted by My Sommelier Press and co-hosted with NICE Bistronome restaurant. Wine lovers, trade professionals, and curious minds gathered to explore how cool climates and moderate climates create very different wine styles—especially for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Albert Wines & Spirits proudly sponsored the Domaine Chanson Mercurey 1er Cru 2022, alongside contributions from other trade professionals who generously provided bottles of their own wines.
Climate is one of the most important factors in wine production because it directly affects the way grapes grow and ripen. Here’s how:
Cool Climate Wines (e.g., Burgundy, New Zealand):
Moderate Climate Wines (e.g., parts of California, Bordeaux):
With this understanding, participants dove into two curated blind tasting flights to put their knowledge to the test.

The first flight showcased Chardonnay and how climate influences this versatile grape.
Chardonnays from cool climates offered crisp acidity, fresh citrus notes, and a touch of minerality, emphasizing the grape’s elegance and finesse. These wines were lean, vibrant, and refreshing.
In contrast, moderate-climate Chardonnays featured riper fruit flavors, a fuller body, and a creamier texture. Flavors of peach and tropical fruits reflected the warmth of their origins.
This tasting gave participants a clear understanding of how temperature and growing conditions shape Chardonnay into two distinct styles: refined and zesty in cooler climates versus round and rich in moderate climates.

The second flight focused on Pinot Noir, a grape loved for its ability to express terroir (a wine’s sense of place). Pinot Noir is especially sensitive to climate, making it the perfect case study for this event.
Albert Wines & Spirits proudly sponsored the:
Domaine Chanson Mercurey 1er Cru 2022 (Cool Climate – Burgundy, France)
This young, classic Burgundian Pinot Noir impressed with its vibrant cherry, violet aromas, earthy tones, and delicate tannins. It was a standout example of cool-climate finesse and is expected to age beautifully over the next few years.

No wine tasting is complete without great food, and Doux Doux delivered with delicious pairings:
These bites highlighted the wines’ acidity, richness, and complexity, giving participants a full sensory experience.
By the end of the evening, attendees learned how something as simple as temperature can create a world of difference in wine:
For Chardonnay and Pinot Noir lovers, understanding climate helps you pick the style you prefer—whether it’s a crisp Chablis or a round California Chardonnay, a delicate Burgundian Pinot Noir or a fuller-bodied example from Oregon.
