Composed of 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in French oak, 55% new, for 17 months, the 2015 Canon la Gaffeliere features a deep garnet-purple color and a cedar-laced nose to begin, giving way to fragrant underlying scents of roses and violets with a core of crushed black currants, blackberries and Bing cherries plus hints of fallen leaves and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, the seductively perfumed red and black fruit fills the mouth, framed with plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing very long and minerally. Count Stephan von Neipperg looks the part of timeless royalty. But this energetic vintner is a modernist, pushing his family’s properties to organic growing practices long thought too difficult to achieve in the maritime climate of Bordeaux. Canon-La Gaffeliere is von Neipperg’s flagship estate, situated on limestone and clay slopes below the plateau of St.-Emilion. This 2015 matches the classic scores earned by the 2010 and 2009, while its price makes it a great value in ageworthy Bordeaux.   Robert Parker: 97Pts; Vinous: 97Pts; James Suckling: 96Pts; Wine Spectator: 96Pts; Neal Martin: 95Pts   No2 of Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2018
